TICKLE ME SILLY WITH FENG SHUI
Feng Shui for children’s bedrooms

by Teresa Marie Marinelli

"After trying just about everything under the sun to calm down my 4 year old son, I turned to Feng Shui. Among many other Feng Shui changes, I placed a water fountain in his room and changed the color of his sheets to blue. He is a different little boy. He is more calm and his energy seems to have been redirected." "A quote from another satisfied client." This is only one of the many examples that explains how Feng Shui, the ancient art of placing objects and furniture with awareness and intention in our environments can change our lives for the better.

Feng Shui is based on the principle that energy can be enhanced and strengthened to allow the flow of harmony and balance in our space. All objects and symbols that we surround ourselves with vibrate on an energetic level. With that said, why not apply these techniques to benefit our children’s lives from the very beginning. Following are some tips for enhancing and activating the chi (energy) in children’s rooms:

  1. Move all electrical items as far from the sleeping area as possible. These items create electromagnetic fields, which are negative and proven to deplete energy. They prevent energy from moving freely and clearly. Many tests have linked these fields to cancer and other illnesses. Such items may include baby monitors, sound machines, televisions, clock radios, computers and stereos. The further these items are from the sleeping/playing area the less damaging the fields.

  2. Place the crib/bed against the wall. Babies and children need support in their growing years and the wall provides this support and stability. A sturdy wooden headboard is another means for providing support and stability. A wooden bed is recommended as in the elemental cycle it represents positive growth. Also, electromagnetic fields do not ground themselves to wooden beds as they tend to with metal beds.

  3. Placing the crib/bed in front of a window can create vulnerability and a sense of insecurity when sleeping. Ensure that blinds or curtains are down when the child is sleeping.

  4. The crib/bed should be the furthest away from the door yet not in line with the door. This is considered the "command position". The child can sit up in bed and easily see anyone coming in or out of the room. Their central nervous system remains calm and they benefit from the expansive yang energy of the room.

  5. All photos and artwork should be hung at a child’s eye level so he/she can appreciate and be stimulated by it.

  6. To activate your child’s creativity area, place your child’s artwork or drawing table
in the right center corner of the room when standing at the door to the room.

  7. Never place your child’s bed on the same wall that houses the plumbing to the toilet. This can cause health problems as the elimination of waste and the constant rush of water is too powerful for them.

  8. To enhance your child’s knowledge and studies area, place books, tapes, and other related materials in the near left corner of the room when standing at the door.

  9. Although every child is different, often with children over two years old, it is best to work with cooler, calmer colors in the room as their energy tends to be very active. Blue or green sheets contain "yin", softer energy, which promotes calmness and peacefulness. Dress them in these colors as well. Pinks and reds are more "yang", more powerful energy, and tend to activate or increase children’s energy. These colors are not recommended for bedding colors unless the child requires a lot of stimulation/activation. Keep in mind that Feng Shui is all about balance. Working with these more activating colors as accents can assist in achieving this balance.

  10. It is important to choose patterns for sheets carefully. Triangular shapes carry
fire energy, which is also activating. Round patterns are recommended as they
    promote wholeness and completeness.

  11. Place any awards or certificates in the center of the far wall when standing at the door as this is the fame and recognition area-what we desire to be known as and how we see ourselves-our self-esteem.

  12. Lastly, the greatest challenge, especially as children get older, is to maintain a clutter-free room so that energy can flow smoothly throughout. Create motivational ways for getting children to keep clothes off the floor and toys/books on shelves or in boxes.

Have fun with the Feng Shui process and monitor your progress. With powerful
intention, a conscious awareness and your love, your children can thrive in
a nurturing and balanced environment.
